The Craft review – cult high-school horror a reminder of the fearless 90s
The 30th-anniversary reissue of this high-school horror cult film revisits teenage anxieties with boldness and assurance.
The cocoon of 1980s and 1990s high-school comedies finally gave rise to a genuine butterfly of dread in this 1996 female-empowerment classic, co-written and directed by Andrew Fleming, now back in theaters for its 30th anniversary. It invites comparison with Heathers or Mean Girls, yet adds a supernatural twist, a flourish of terror where comedy or sensuality might typically reside—and it delivers a deeply unsettling “René Magritte mirror” visual jolt worthy of any pure horror film.
Robin Tunney portrays Sarah, a reserved, diligent teen from San Francisco grappling with depression and lingering guilt over her mother’s death during childbirth, along with ongoing resentment toward her new stepmother. Her father has moved them to Los Angeles for a fresh start at a new school. This newcomer intrigues a clique dubbed “the bitches of Eastwick,” led by tough-goth Nancy (Fairuza Balk); she commands her two followers, Rochelle (Rachel True) and Bonnie, played by Neve Campbell, who that same year became a horror icon with the emerging Scream series.
